Enrichment Play at Home

Boredom is one of the most underestimated causes of problem behaviour in pets. A dog that digs up the garden or a cat that knocks things off shelves isn't being difficult — they're telling you they need more to do. The good news is that enrichment doesn't require expensive toys or hours of your time.

What Is Enrichment?

Enrichment means giving your pet activities that engage their natural instincts — sniffing, foraging, hunting, problem-solving. These activities tire pets out mentally, often more effectively than physical exercise alone. A 15-minute sniff session can be as tiring for a dog as a 30-minute walk.

Ideas for Dogs

• Snuffle mats: Hide kibble or treats in the fabric folds so your dog has to use their nose to find them.
• Frozen Kongs: Fill a Kong toy with wet food or peanut butter and freeze overnight. Keeps a dog busy for 20–30 minutes.
• DIY obstacle course: Use cushions, chairs, and garden pots to create a simple course. Teaching your dog to weave through objects builds confidence and tires them mentally.
• The muffin tin game: Place treats in some cups of a muffin tin and cover all cups with tennis balls. Your dog has to figure out which cups have food.

Ideas for Cats

• Paper bag tunnels: Remove the handles and line up a few paper bags. Cats love to explore and hide inside them.
• Window perches: A cat watching birds or street activity is a cat that's mentally engaged. Position a perch near a window with a view.
• Puzzle feeders: Instead of a bowl, serve meals in a simple puzzle feeder. Even rolling a treat ball works well.
• Wand toy rotations: Cats habituate quickly. Keep 5–6 wand toys and rotate them so each one feels new.

Making It a Routine

Even 10 minutes of intentional play or a puzzle at breakfast can make a significant difference to your pet's daily mood and behaviour. Start small, notice what your pet responds to, and build from there.
