Grooming Without the Fuss

Regular grooming is one of the most important things you can do for your pet's health — and one of the most skipped. It's not just about appearance. Grooming lets you spot lumps, skin issues, parasites, and dental problems early, when they're easiest to treat.

Building a Calm Grooming Routine

The biggest mistake people make is waiting until a dog or cat desperately needs grooming before trying. By that point the coat is matted, the nails are overgrown, and the experience is uncomfortable for everyone. The goal is short, frequent, low-stakes sessions from an early age.

Start by touching your pet in the areas you'll need to groom — ears, paws, mouth, tail — without doing anything. Pair each touch with a treat. Over a few sessions, introduce the tool (brush, nail file, toothbrush) and let them sniff it. Reward calm behaviour. Only then start the actual grooming.

Brushing

Short-haired dogs and cats may only need brushing once a week. Long-haired breeds can need daily attention, especially behind the ears, under the arms, and around the collar where mats form fastest. Use a slicker brush for general work and a metal comb to check for tangles underneath.

Never cut out a mat with scissors — it's very easy to cut skin. Instead, work a detangler through the mat and tease it apart with your fingers before using a brush.

Nail Care

Overgrown nails cause pain and postural problems. You can hear when nails are too long — they click on hard floors. Trim just the tip (the clear part), avoiding the quick (the pink blood vessel inside). If your pet has black nails where you can't see the quick, trim small amounts at a time and look for a grey dot in the centre of the cut surface — that means you're close to the quick.

Ears and Teeth

Check ears weekly for redness, odour, or discharge. Wipe gently with a damp cloth — do not insert anything into the ear canal. For teeth, daily brushing with pet-safe toothpaste is ideal. If your pet won't tolerate a brush, dental wipes or water additives can help.
