Getting out with your pet is one of the best things you can do for both of you. But an unprepared outing — no water, no clean-up supplies, an overheated dog — can turn a fun day into a stressful one fast. A little planning goes a long way.

The Basics: What to Always Pack

• Water and a portable bowl: Dogs can dehydrate quickly, especially on warm Australian days. Carry at least 500ml per hour of activity and offer it regularly, not just when they pant.
• Waste bags: Always more than you think you need. Double bag at the beach — sand makes everything heavier.
• A leash and collar with ID tags: Even if your dog is well trained off-lead, busy environments can spook them. ID tags save lives.
• A towel: For beach days especially. Rinse salt water off before it dries and irritates the skin.

Beach Days

Most dogs love the beach, but there are a few things to watch for. Saltwater makes dogs thirsty — they will drink from the ocean if they can, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea. Keep fresh water accessible and discourage ocean drinking. After the visit, rinse your dog thoroughly — salt and sand cause skin irritation if left in the coat.

Also check for blue-green algae warnings at your local beach. In warm months, certain waterways develop toxic algal blooms. If the water looks foamy or discoloured, keep your dog out.

Road Trips

For longer drives, plan stops every 1.5 to 2 hours so your dog can stretch, toilet, and drink. Never leave pets in a parked car — temperatures inside a car on a 25 degree day can reach 50 degrees within minutes.

For cats travelling in carriers, cover the carrier with a light blanket to reduce visual stimulation. Familiar bedding inside helps them feel secure.

Signs of Overheating

Know what to look for: excessive panting, drooling, glazed eyes, stumbling, or vomiting. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to shade, apply cool water to the neck and armpits, and get to a vet immediately.
